Family Photography in Surrey

Surrey & The Lower Mainland

Family photographs are not just about how everyone looks at the camera. They are also about the relationships, personalities, and little interactions that make each family different. I offer family photography in Surrey and throughout the Lower Mainland, with two different approaches: classic family portraits in my natural-light studio and relaxed lifestyle photography in the comfort of your own home. Whether you prefer a simple studio background or the familiar surroundings of your home, we can plan a session that reflects your family’s personality.

Studio Family Photography in Surrey

My Surrey studio is a comfortable, welcoming space designed for natural-light photography. Simple backgrounds and soft lighting allow us to focus on the people in the photographs rather than elaborate decorations.

Studio family sessions are ideal for parents who prefer clean, beautifully composed portraits. We can photograph the entire family together, each parent with the children, siblings, and individual portraits.

I provide gentle direction throughout the session, helping everyone feel comfortable without making the photographs look overly posed.

For families with young children, I always allow time for breaks and work around their mood rather than expecting them to sit still for long periods.

In-Home Family Photography in Surrey

Your home is where much of your family’s everyday life happens, and it can also be a wonderful setting for photographs.

In-home family photography takes a more relaxed, lifestyle approach. Instead of formal posing, I focus on natural interaction between family members.

You don’t need a perfectly decorated home or a large space. We can work with the available natural light and choose a few comfortable areas that photograph well.

These sessions are particularly suitable for families with babies and young children who feel most at ease in familiar surroundings.

Studio or In-Home Family Photography: Which Should You Choose?

Both types of sessions create beautiful family photographs, but the experience and final images are quite different.

A studio session is a good choice if you prefer simple backgrounds, coordinated outfits, and a combination of traditional and natural family portraits.

An in-home session is better suited to families who enjoy a more documentary approach, where children can move freely and everyday interactions become part of the photographs.

If you’re unsure which option is right for your family, I’m happy to help you decide.

Family Photography with Babies and Children

Children don’t always want to sit still, smile, or look directly at the camera, and that’s completely normal.

With younger children, I prefer to keep things relaxed and flexible. Sometimes a little play, a cuddle with a parent, or a short break is all that’s needed.

I don’t expect perfect behaviour or forced smiles. I work with each child’s personality and comfort level to create natural expressions and genuine interaction.

What to Wear for Your Photoshoot

For studio family portraits, I recommend clothing in coordinated colours rather than identical outfits. Neutral shades, warm earth tones, cream, beige, white, and other soft colours work beautifully with my studio backgrounds.

Try to avoid large logos, bright prints, and very busy patterns that can draw attention away from faces.

Comfortable clothing is especially important for young children. Choose outfits that allow them to move naturally and feel relaxed. If you’re unsure what to wear, I’m happy to offer suggestions before your session.

Preparing for Your Session

A little planning can help make your family photoshoot more enjoyable. Before the session, we’ll discuss the style of photographs you prefer, who will be participating, and any particular combinations you’d like to include.

For studio photography, I recommend arriving in your chosen outfits and keeping accessories simple. If you’re planning an in-home session, there’s no need to prepare the entire house. A few tidy areas with good natural light are usually all we need.

I also encourage parents to think about the photographs they would love to have together — whether it’s the whole family, each parent with the children, or a portrait of just the two of you.
