Newborn Session Preparation

Newborn session preparation can feel overwhelming at first, especially in those early days with a new baby. This guide covers everything you need to know before your session, from what to bring and what to wear to how to prepare your baby and what to expect on the day. With a little newborn session preparation, the whole experience can feel calm, smooth, and enjoyable.

When Should I Book My Newborn Session?

It is best to book your newborn session during pregnancy. Since babies rarely arrive exactly on their due date, I first reserve your session around your due date and then confirm the final date once your baby is born. However, if you already know you will have an induction or a planned C-section, we can often schedule the session more precisely in advance.

What Is the Best Age for Newborn Photos?

The ideal time for newborn photos is usually within the first 5 to 21 days after birth. During this stage, babies are often sleepier, curl naturally, and usually settle more easily into the flow of the session. Still, every baby and every recovery is different, so I always try to allow flexibility when needed.

WHEN SHOULD WE ARRIVE FOR THE NEWBORN SESSION?

Please aim to arrive 10–15 minutes before your scheduled session. Arriving on time is very important, as it gives you, your baby, and your photographer enough time to settle into the space comfortably before we begin.

How Long Does a Newborn Session Take?

The session usually takes between one and three hours, depending on the package you choose. This extra time allows for feeding, soothing, changing, and short breaks whenever needed, so the session never feels rushed. Meanwhile, you are very welcome to bring your own snacks or enjoy the coffee provided in the waiting room.

HOW TO HELP YOUR BABY FEEL CALM BEFORE A NEWBORN SESSION?

One of the best ways to prepare is to feed your baby shortly before the session or as soon as you arrive. As a result, your baby is often more relaxed and sleepy, which helps the session flow more naturally. Ultimately, newborn session preparation is not about making everything perfect, but about helping your baby feel comfortable and cared for.

Newborn Session Preparation Tips Before You Arrive

Baby should be dressed as simply as possible before the session. Clothing that does not need to go over the head and items that are easy to remove work best. Also, avoid anything too tight, as fitted clothing or tight socks can leave marks on the skin that may still be visible in photographs. If possible, it is helpful for your baby to be freshly bathed and relaxed before arriving.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO MY NEWBORN SESSION?

To help keep your baby comfortable throughout the session, please bring one or two prepared bottles if needed, as well as a soother or pacifier, fresh diapers, and wipes. In fact, these small items can make a big difference during the session, as they help us soothe your baby more quickly if they become unsettled.

WHAT SHOULD PARENTS and Siblings WEAR FOR A NEWBORN SESSION?

Clothing Ideas

Soft, neutral clothing photographs most beautifully and keeps the focus on your baby and your connection as a family. Cream, beige, taupe, soft grey, and muted earthy tones usually work very well. Try to avoid bright colours, large logos, and busy patterns.

For siblings, simple and comfortable outfits are always best. Clothing should feel easy to move in and should not distract from the overall softness of the images.

WHITE

Very classy and elegant. White always looks so beautiful. You can choose to expose your upper arms or keep them covered.

BLACK

ou can never go wrong with black. Just make sure you don’t have any logos on your clothes.

GRAY

Gray color adds style to your look. Its neutrality allows for creating elegant and timeless photographes.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY BABY CRIES DURING THE NEWBORN SESSION?

That is completely normal and never a problem. Because every baby is different, each session is guided by your baby’s individual needs. We always allow time for feeding, cuddling, soothing, and changing whenever necessary. While some babies sleep deeply, others need a little more support and extra time. Either way, that is all a natural part of the process.

SHOULD PARENTS BE IN THE NEWBORN SESSION PHOTOS?

Yes, absolutely. Even if you feel tired or not quite like yourself yet, these images often become some of the most meaningful photographs from the entire session. After all, your baby will only be this little once. Because of that, being in the frame with them adds so much emotional value to your gallery.

What Can We Expect at the Studio?

The studio experience is designed to feel calm, welcoming, and unhurried. From the moment you arrive, I will gently guide you through each step, so you never have to worry about how to pose or what to do. While a little newborn session preparation before the day can be helpful, once you are here, you can simply relax and settle in. As a result, the session feels easier, smoother, and more enjoyable for the whole family.

More Outfit Ideas

Classic gray. I have multiple backdrop choices in my studio, and a gray color for the clothes will look awesome. It doesn’t matter which choice you make for the background.
Multiple colours. Don’t be afraid to use more than one colour for your session. Peek in the main collar and add one or two more. Make sure they are working together.
Bold and vibrant. For this option, I recommend choosing one statement color and adding one or two neutrals. In this case, you will have a beautiful classic portrait.

Outfit Inspiration For sibling

For sibling pictures, I usually recommend dressing all children in neutral colors, as this helps create a soft and timeless look. However, this does not mean you have to avoid floral dresses for girls. Instead, simply choose something elegant and understated. Alternatively, jeans paired with lighter shirts can also work beautifully.

If you are having a hard time choosing a dress for your daughter, try to select one without too many layers, sparkles, or bold designs.

In general, dresses with long sleeves or simple straps tend to photograph best, because they keep the overall look clean and classic.
If you have a child under six years old, I usually recommend laying them on the beanbag for the portrait, since this position is often the safest and most comfortable. In that case, you only need to choose the top.

I usually prefer sleeveless tops, because when a child is lying down, shirts with sleeves often roll up and create extra volume around the neck. As a result, the portrait looks less clean and natural.
